GIRLS VOLLEYBALL PROGRAM PROVIDES FREE CLINIC FOR CYO ATHLETES

February 9, 2018 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

Although the high school volleyball season finished some time ago, the Lady Firebirds never stop sharing their love for the game, no matter what month it is!

Over the last few weeks, Kellenberg athletes from both the junior varsity and varsity programs provided free skills clinics to over 90 CYO players who ranged from the fifth to the eighth grade! Future volleyball players benefited from both the dynamic demonstrations and the instructional pointers given by the Lady Firebirds.

Volunteering to share their passion with these up-and-coming stars were sophomores Maggie Caffrey, Krista Handler, Julia Merz, and Emily Acimovic; juniors Mackenzie Good and Jenna Doyle; seniors Trinity Manning, Kylie Grubb, Molly Perrotta, Grace Cullen, Madison Gale, and Tara Hagerman. They are tremendous athletes who recognize that we begin our human journey with love, and that of all of the gifts we have been given, as St. Paul tells us in Corinthians, the greatest of these is love!

All Volleyball Announces Final Amount from Dig Pink Challenge

February 8, 2018 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

The Dig Pink Challenge Powered by All Volleyball is a fundraising event centered around a volleyball match, featuring local St. Louis high school teams. The goal is to bring the community together in a fun-filled day to raise funds and awareness for The Side-Out Foundation, the only organization using volleyball to raise money for stage 4 metastatic breast cancer research!

This year, All Volleyball turned it up a notch! Instead of a single match, we gathered 6 teams to play 3 matches, all with the same mission: playing volleyball for a purpose to raise money for The Side-Out Foundation.

6 Teams. 3 Matches. One Mission.

View the announcement of the final number below!

The teams this year featured current state champions, Lafayette High School playing Parkway West High School. Then there was Cor Jesu Academy playing Webster Groves High School. Finally, our awesome host school, Francis Howell High School competing against Troy Buchanan High School.

One of the coolest moments was the presentation of the uniforms. The owners of All Volleyball, along with a member from The Side-Out Foundation who flew in for the event, met with each team to give them special, custom sublimated Dig Pink jerseys as a thank you for participating and raising money. These jerseys also feature special decoration honoring The Side-Out Foundation to help spread the word about them even after the event.

In addition to the volleyball matches, All Volleyball set up fun for those attending too! Those attending could pick up some snacks from the concession stand to eat while playing carnival games, posing for the Pink Out Photo Booth, bidding on the silent auction items or testing their luck at the 50/50 or raffle baskets!

This event truly was a labor of love for All Volleyball. To bring 6 teams together, to organize 3 matches and get everyone excited toward one mission is hard. But when that final whistle blew, it was worth every moment spent. To spread the word about The Side-Out Foundation to 6 teams-worth of people and their friends and families and raise a substantial donation doing it, is a privilege that we, here at All Volleyball, hold dear to our hearts. 6 Teams. 3 Matches. 1 Mission. The mission doesn’t end with this event, it is still going on and we’d love to have you help us!

About The Side-Out Foundation

The Side-Out Foundation is a non-profit organization based in Fairfax, VA that harnesses the power of volleyball players to host Dig Pink® volleyball tournaments that raise money for critical research of late stage metastatic breast cancer – the least funded form of breast cancer scientific studies. In 2016, a total of 765 different high school, college and club teams from coast to coast contributed $1,138,337 to Side-Out’s directed clinical trials which take place at leading cancer institutions in the United States. This grassroots campaign raised more money in 2016 for the breast cancer cause than individual efforts staged by multi-billion dollar leagues like the NFL, NBA, MLB or NHL. Two-time Olympic Beach Volleyball medalist April Ross, who lost her mother to breast cancer, is an advocate for the charity. Over the years, Side-Out has raised more than $12 million for research on the disease, has completed two successful clinical trials using Side-Out’s individualized treatment protocols and is currently in the midst of a third trial, it’s largest yet. Volleyball coaches across the country use the events as a team building experience that also reinforces the role sports can and should play in supporting athletes’ communities off the court. Most matches take place in the fall in conjunction with October’s designation as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For details check out https://side-out.org/.

A ‘souper’ way to donate

February 8, 2018 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

The shelves of local food pantries will be fuller thanks to the Westhampton Beach Elementary School’s annual Souper Bowl.

As part of the annual food drive, students used their soup and nonperishable food donations to vote for the football team whom they believed would win this year’s Super Bowl by placing them in a team bin. The final score revealed that 248 students believed the Eagles would win, while 65 placed their soup bets on the Patriots. The items were donated to a local food pantry.

Students help local winter shelter provide services to homeless

February 6, 2018 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

Etown students have helped the winter shelter in a variety of other ways, as well. Student-athletes from the Student Athlete Association have donated extra food from the Market Place to the winter shelter through the Food Recovery Network. In 2017, they donated about 76 pounds of food.

Resident assistants (RAs) helped organize donated clothing and prepare the winter shelter by organizing the bins and sleeping mats. McFarland also recalled a time when a group of RAs helped a family of nine move into a new home.

Etown students have also volunteered at the winter shelter, greeting clients and serving meals. To volunteer, students need to complete training and pass clearances.

“It really is an opportunity for students to have a hands-on learning opportunity and feel really worthwhile in what they’re doing and have an ongoing experience,” McFarland said.

Other ways that Etown students have been involved with homelessness is through service trips with the CCCE. During the Urban Poverty Experience and Service Trip Friday, Nov. 3 to Saturday, Nov. 4, about 24 participants from the College lived in a shelter and helped with service projects at Bethesda Mission in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
